Top 100 Wines of 2017 – James Melendez

Easily the most difficult article I write each year and I am glad it is difficult.  While some might say finding the top 100 wines easy I would differ simply because there are so many stellar wines.

How to pick?

It is a list I start early in the year and I, of course, have to edit to make it a top 100 list.

I love obvious wine regions like Champagne, Bordeaux, Amarone, Sicilia, Napa Valley, Yarra Valley amongst many others.  But I also like the hidden gems and there are a ton of them.  Let’s start with style–white Pinot Noir or sometimes referred to as Pinot Noir Blanc – so little of this precious wine and that is perhaps the way it will always be.  I like natural wines, wines from lesser talked about regions like Texas…. yes, Texas–especially the wine grapes that are grown there versus shipped in.  I like Michigan Riesling; Sicilian Perricone, New Mexico high altitude Riesling, Western Slope Cabernets, I love Canadian and Australian Pinot Noir.  I love Eastern European, Moroccan and Lebanese wines and I like rare varieties.  There is so much to love and enjoy and the story continues.

Once I finalise and publish here I do not hesitate or blink.  I am proud to do this the latest.  It seems that James Suckling or Wine Spectator get earlier and earlier.  And like fine wine I am okay to lay down this article until December…. soak in so to speak the loveliness of each years released wines.  I want to wait until I have tasted a variety of wines and I am always striving to tasting ‘wines from all regions, all styles, and all varieties’ yearly.

What to do with this list….. well…. go taste.  Ask your wine merchant to bring some of these bottles so you can enjoy.   Have a wine tasting party with your friends and see what they might bring.

Keep this handy and also subscribe here and to my YouTube channel.

When you read this list please view it in terms of a total list of 100 wines.  This is sorted alphabetically hence the first wine is because it starts with “A” and that it is not the the best or top wine of the year.  Many publications look at a top 100 as a way to make a hierarchy.  This is not realistic because it is a race between variety and region if not style.  I think looking at subsequent numbers makes in a 100 wine list that #2, #3, etc. are a strange ranking and how does one construct that.  I think that is truly not realistic and more importantly not of value.

Firstly, I am listing my list in terms of all wines.  Below that I will list if there are videos associated with each one–I am doing this so the list is easier to view.

Thank you for following me and supporting by reading this and all my articles.

About James Melendez

I love wine and have had the privilege of working in the wine trade as a senior national wine marketing manager for a wine, food and home goods retailer in 30+ US States. I executed into making wine experiential and made 'wines of the world' programme work in a highly regulated framework for a successful business proposition. My "wine" site also incorporates those categories intimately involved with wine such as food, travel and lifestyle. This site incorporates my many dimensions of interest. I love to review and also talk about many aspects of wine. I have been privileged to visit many wine countries and find them enthralling no matter how many times I visit. I love all aspects of wine: viticulture, history, winemaking, brand development, wine regions and many more aspects. This is a living tradition that needs documentation, education, reporting and reviewing. Do I have favourite varieties and styles? I love so many varieties and often it is situational and yet there are time honoured wines that I anticipate and I am passionate about. I like all colours of wine and all styles. I have had a mad passionate affair with sparkling wines and they are always top of mind. Wine nourishes our soul and is the key to connecting with other people at our dinner table.
