Albero Tempranillo Barrica – 2006 – 8.8 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This wine needed some oxygen to open it up—initial out of the bottle was a bit tight–some time in oxygen opened up this Tempranillo that exhibits notes of roasted blueberry–subtle spice of ground clove, black pepper, wood and field mushroom.   This wine is organic and has a real cork and if that isn’t enough only $5.99 at Trader Joes in California.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz – 2006 – 8.7 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

In one sitting, I enjoyed two vintages of Bin 28–ten years difference–one being 1996 and the other 2006.  The 1996 was a wine that time has made even better.  This wine classically exhibits bright red fruit of basted red plum and raspberry, some earthen notes like mushroom, and scents of freshly cut cedar.   I can picture this wine aging nicely.

Shannon Ridge Lake County Syrah – 2007 – 8.6 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This wine exhibits copious notes of raspberry, pepper, a slight hint of fresh garden herbs, and earthen notes of Fall.  Not as focused as I expected but a low entry price point does make for an early week red wine.

Gary Farrell Hallberg Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir – 2007 – 9.3 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Eight days ago I liked Gary Farrell’s Starr Ridge Vineyards Pinot Noir but when compared and unfairly so this vineyard – Hallberg Vineyard is producing classic Russian River Pinot Noir; elegant and bold, refined and focused.  This wine is complex and concentrates notes of rose petal, haunting scent from an herb garden, braised black cherry, pepper, and ground clove and allspice.  The acid structure is balanced and supports the overall components of this Pinot Noir.  Completely enjoyable.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz – 1996 – 8.9 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

A wine that has aged well; notes of subtle dark red fruit, noticeable soft spices of ground clove, field mushroom and moist wood.  I do think that this is getting near the end of it’s lifecycle.  I do have a 1995 and am looking for an occasion now to enjoy this wine.

Penfolds RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz – 2006 – 9.2 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

A well structured wine and I can imagine after a few years in will become it will become even more dynamic.

This wine is bold but not overwhelming; wondrous herbaceous notes like Eucalyptus and fennel; roasted dark red fruit; black plum, blueberry, raspberry and accented with soft notes of nutmeg and pepper.

I have a first vintage of RWT and I do look forward to trying someday–just trying to figure out when that will be.

Gustave Lorentz Alsace Pinot Blanc Reserve – 2006 – 8.9 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

Wonderful acid base that envelopes pitted fruit characteristics with notes of white flowers, and the most mild spice signatures of ground cardamom and essence of vanilla.

Glen Carlou Grand Classique Paarl Red Blend – 2006 – 8.7 – 2009 James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc.   A very familiar South African signature of earth and game; this wine contains the following notes of baked black cherry, black pepper, bramble and nutmeg.

Château Perray Jouannet Anjou – 2005 – 8.8 – 2009 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This Cabernet Franc exemplifies a very solid and earthy wine; the earthen notes are exquisetly pronounced but only loveliness is noted in each sip.  A plenitude of Crimini and Porcini mushroom, fallen leaves, ground clove and the scent of rain in a dry climate.  This wine finishes with black plum and cherry.

Gary Farrell Russian River Valley Starr Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir – 2006 – 8.8 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This wine took a while to open up; at first it was tight and nearly overpowering in it’s earthy notes.  A bit of oxygen opened this wine to unfold characteristics of black cherry, violet, fennel and Pioppini mushroom.
