Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz – 2006 – 8.8 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This wine is quite different from it’s sister–Bin 28–but there is nothing wrong with that.  This shiraz has a full expression of it’s appellation…some people mistake it for subdued quality.  There is nothing subdued about this wine – an expressive wild berry composition that does not mark the tongue with this singular profile instead it is a prelude of things to come—mushroom, moistened earth, ground winter spices and comes together on the finish.

Penfolds Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling – 2008 – 8.9 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

A superbly dry, very dry Riesling—so little residual sugar—almost non-detectable.

Lovely notes of hibiscus, almond, and white peach basked in a brilliant acid.

St. Mary Bells & Whistles Limestone Coast Red Blend – 2005 – 8.4 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This red blend is Cabernet Sauvignon 65&, Shiraz 20%, Cabernet Franc 11% and Merlot 4%.  This wine is superbly hot at 15% alcohol.   This wine heat obscures some of the blueberry notes; and plenty of chile Poblano and chile Passilla, some sweet spice on the finish.

Epicuro Lazio Vermentino – 2007 – 8.6 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This wine is superbly dry in a beautiful honeyed hue with notes of almond, Granny Smith green apple… and a slight herbaceous finish.  a perfect wine for summer time sipping and low in alcohol in 13%.  Vermentino is a wine originating in the Iberian peninsula and is now planted in Lazio and Sardinia.   Lower in it’s acid profile yet still a nice wine to serve with appetitizers.

Epicuro Salice Salentino Reserva Negro Amaro Malvasia Nera Blend – 2005 – 8.9 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This wine from the Salice Salentino which is the boot heal of Italy–it’s 80% Negro Amaro and 20% Malvasia Nera.  The Negro Amaro grape in mine opinion is a grape to look out for from Italy–it is a beautifully scented grape that is nearly black as the name suggest–the Italian word ‘Negro’ means black and the word Amaro comes from the Greek “Maru” which connotes bitterness–however there is no bitterness but bountiful quantities of earthen notes.  This wine is lush and gives characteristics of rose petal, blackberry – black plum -and this wine is not showy but a truly complex and sophisticated wine and has a superb dry finish.  Other notes are mushroom, orchard in the fall season, ground mace and clove.   It’s a wine that goes extremely well with food and it’s scent is truly magnificient.  I predict we will see more Negro Amaro’s hit U.S. shelves, restaurants and wine bars.
Found this wine at Trader Joes at a bargain price of $4.99.
