Wine Events – A Few Success Points – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

I attend many wine events every year. I always enjoy tasting the latest vintages, new labels, wines that I have not tasted and wine regions that don’t have a wine distribution path.  And as I always attend I wonder how do people remember what they tasted?  My goal is to taste at least one wine from each table.  That is a tall order especially when there are few hours and a large exhibit hall filled with winery representatives.  I notice that I am one of the few with my iPad ready to take notes.  Some people bring pen and paper but many more bring neither.   There are marketing materials and an occasional exchange of business cards.

There are so many wine labels and I think the chief goal of many brands is to be remembered.  I do think there are many ways to create ways to remember and receive awareness of wines, brands and labels.

I think the following tools can be helpful:

  • QR Code(s) – wine brand, label, specific wines – reduces paper that some people may or may not take–easily accessible for later recall
  • Softcopy programs – makes writing quick and easy to publish online – which can make for immediate upload to one or many social medias
  • A Media / Trade tasting – a section of an event space where trade and media can taste with easy access and so that they can get immediate tasting for reviews, write ups.  It can be hard when media and / or trade needs to taste as much as possible and may miss that opportunity to taste something they want to write up or buy

¡Salud!

Rhone Rangers 2011 Grand Tasting: A Love for Rhone – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

I enjoy each Rhone Rangers and especial this years grand tasting.  Each tasting I plan on tasting everything—I start as soon as the event is opened and stay to the very close.    I could not taste everything but I sought out as representative body of wine that I could.

Syrah has been noted on a downtrend with sales down 11% according to Nielsen.  A few winery representatives I spoke with said the environment was tough and many were optimistic about the future.  And there were a few labels that were calling the contents a blend when in fact they could have been called a Syrah.

Rhone Rangers was a very good showing to reveal Syrah’s diversity—and this diversity is key to many a wide range of tastes.  I don’t think wine producers were trying to make Syrah the “next big thing” as the total acres are far from outpacing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or even Pinot Noir.  Syrah is not only has diversity in terms of standing on it’s own it also is a dynamic wine to blend.

US Syrah is here to stay and I think the downtrend is only temporary.  There are simply too many great Syrah to not only be tasted but to be enjoyed not as one time buy but an ongoing trend.

This tasting also highlighted dazzling Mourvèdre and Grenache—probably the best tasting I have had in quite a number of vintages.

My rankings for the wines I tasted at Rhone Rangers 2011.  I will write up each wine at a later point.

ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates and Producers) 2011 Grand Tasting Scores – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Each yearly visit to ZAP is a reminder that wine tasting season has begun in the bay area.  Ft. Mason plays host to the yearly event—this year celebrating 20 years and is the only wine event to use both the Herbst and Festival Pavilions.   I do look forward to attending each year and this year was no exception.

I liked the mini stations highlighting Zinfandel blends—I think that was essential to showing the event goers Zinfandels flexibility and how well this varietal plays well with others.

I mentioned to someone that I was going to ZAP and their response was that “all Zinfandels are the same.”  I said that he should go and (re)discover Zinfandel—such a large variation of styles that there wasn’t one to be found but many that he would probably enjoy.

After a while I stopped thinking that I was drinking Zinfandel—I was drinking wine and each table I went to I didn’t anticipate what each wine would be like but rather what surprises might uncover.

Here are my scores for the wines that I tasted:

Winery Visit: Imagery Estate – 9.2 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Always enjoy my visits to Imagery Estate.  A beautiful Sonoma Valley location and sister winery to Benziger winery.   This winery situated in Glen Ellen is also proximate to Arrowood.  Imagery Estate for their art work focus both in the art work on site but also the art work featured on their wine labels.  You will see an impressive display of all or nearly of all the bottles they have produced.  They have a variety of varietals – everything from Viognier, Barbera, Syrah, Tempranillo, Malbec, to Cabernet Sauvignon.  Their 2001 Barbera was dynamite and it was a gift that I had received several years ago.  Opening the bottle up I did expect a nice wine but was completely surprised on the exceptional quality and focus.  And a very welcoming staff promise a good visit to all that enter.

Family Winemakers of California Grand Tasting 2010 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Each year I anticipate each grand tasting of the Family Winemakers of California for many reasons; I love the discovery of new wineries and to be able to enjoy all varietals.  This year I was only able to attend the Monday event as each year I attend both Sunday and Monday.   So my reviews weigh heavily on red wines.  A great event and showing.  Napa Cabernet Sauvignons showing strongly along with the diverse Paso Robles and Central Coast regions.  A definitive event–here are the scores I gave each wine.

Wine Wednesday Virtual Tasting: #WineWednesdayTasting – May 19, 2010 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Wine Wednesday is a virtual tasting to be held this coming Wednesday, May 19, 2010 on Twitter.  This event is to bring all wine interested people together on #WineWednesday to enjoy a virtual tasting—this can be a virtual tasting coupled with inviting friends and family for both a virtual and literal event.

#WineWednesdayTasting start time is when it is most appropriate to open a bottle or bottles to taste and tweet.  Tweet: notes, thoughts, impressions, recommendations, your rating, pics, and video.  Open a bottle that you have been wanting to open, open a varietal that you have never tried before, try a wine from an wine region that you have always wanted to try, there is a plethora of options.

I have suggested at #WineOclock which is a time that you typically start enjoying a glass of wine in the evening.  Enjoying wine in your wine appropriate enjoyment time will vary for everyone and that is the exciting part of this experience to come.  I plan to open a bottle of wine at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time. (5/19)

I can envision this being a weekly event on #WineWednesday and enjoying a general or themed tasting.  I can envision that this be something to be enjoyed by everyone.  And that this be a way to enjoy about a variety of wines that perhaps we might not have had an opportunity to enjoy or to be aware.  I look forward to starting this adventure!

Rhone Rangers Grand Tasting San Francisco – March 28 2010 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Another fantastic Grand Tasting at Rhone Rangers 2010 in San Francisco.  The US Rhone varietals have been not just improving vintage over vintage but definitive styles are created, developed and honed in on.  This years tasting was not as crowded in years past–partly due to economic reasons–but I would expect as the economy turns around attendance will pick up.  Rhone Rangers is a special place to come and enjoy a set of varietals that does not have the following of the Bordeaux or Burgundy set–it is a splendid time for the senses to try something new and something familiar.  I have published a few of these entries and working toward completing a review of each wine.

Rosé Avengers and Producers Sixth Annual PinkOut – May 11, 2010 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Rosés are wines that are either forgotten or passed on at a tasting where there are white and reds–the in betweenness is either a challenge point or something that is ignored.   If you like sparkling Rosé why not try a still one?  The colors of the wines here were beautiful–pale light red, liquid strawberry, jewel toned, etc.  The flavors and scents were also bountiful and differentiated.  More to come in my individual reviews.
