Caliza Azimuth Paso Robles Red Blend – 2007 – 8.8 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

51 % Syrah, 19% Grenache, 14% Mourvèdre, 8% Tannat and 8% Alicante Bouschet.  This wine has notes of reduced blackberry, chocolate dust, Chanterelle mushroom and roasted red pepper.

This wine is 51% Petit Sirah, 43% Syrah, 4% Tannat, and 2% Touriga Nacional; this wine has rich dark fruit notes—dark red cherry, blueberry, black pepper, Eucalyptus, earthy notes, and a nose of cedar box.  Alcohol content 14.5%.

A most appealing red wine blend using the following varietals. 76% Touriga Nacional, 12% Tannat, and 2% Touriga Franca.  This wine shows great potential for more Iberian varietal wines to come.  A dazzling array of bright red fruit, roasted almond and ground clove; well balanced acid structure and weight.

Barretto Cellars California Vinho Tinto – 2005 – 8.6 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This wine is 39% Tempranillo, 30% Touriga Nacional, 28% Tannat, and 3% Touriga Franca. This wine has a nice weight with its tannin, alcohol and acid structure. The wine exhibits the following notes: Simmered red plum and red pear; a dash of winter baking spices and a hint of earth and wood.

Cambiata Santa Lucia Mountains Tannat – 2004 – 8.7 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

A what? A Tannat…wine?! Yes, there is such a thing a grape that is grown with any significance is in France and Uruguay. This wine is dense, viscous and intense with plumes of anise, just picked raspberry, and marjoram. Bring this to a wine tasting and you are certain to have a wine that no one else would think of bringing.
