El Molino Rutherford Pinot Noir – 2004 – 9.1 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Pinot Noir from Rutherford? I was also surprised when I had a Pinot Noir from Humboldt County (from another producer). I think that more winemakers are looking to expand beyond the usual suspects in the Central Coast, Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino counties. I was suprised that this Pinot several miles north of much beloved Carneros country could pull off such a nice bottle of Pinot Noir. I found the wine to have a lovely richness (not in the filling sense) but in a synergistic way. The wine presents with an abundance of red roasted pepper, Oaxacan chiles and cooking spices, a hint of nutmeg, and raspberry confit.

¡Salud!
