Brkic Čitlučka Žilavka – 2009 – 9.2 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

A wondrous wine that is a delight for food–shellfish: oysters and crab, cod, halibut, Monkfish.  Vegetarian dishes like pasta or gold beet salad; cheese and I’m thinking Pecorino.

This wine is produced without the touch of oak and it certainly does not need it.  A great and clear expression of the wine varietal that is distinctly unique-you know you are not drinking a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Riesling or Gewürztraminer.

This wine is packs a lot of finesse and elegance–roasted Comice pear-Meyer lemon,Thyme, allspice, and freshly roasted New Mexico pine nut.  This wine is 12% alcohol and a beautiful gold coloration.

We live in great times–though it may not feel like it.  No other time in history have we had wines that are true and great expressions of terroir, high quality, and a vast array of styles and numerous varietals.

This part of Europe is finally gaining acclaim for producing lovely wines.   Though this part of the world has a very long history of producing wine.  Many of wine my wine text have given barely a page to page and half and treated each varietal as merely an incidental wine.

This wine has a suggested retail of $14.95 and is completely worth it.  It is time to get to know the other “Z” wine–Žilavka.

Winery Čitluk Hercegovacki Mostar Blatina – 2007 – 9.0 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

The Blatina grape is a very interesting grape; needs to be planted next to other wine varietals otherwise (as this is a female flowering vine) will never develop into berries.  This beautiful signature of black cherry, chocolate dust, Oaxacan simmering. scent of Thyme, rose garden, rose petal and earth.  Low alcohol – 12% and is a perfect wine to pair with Indian and Mexican foods and certainly enjoyable to drink by itself.

Winery Čitluk Mostar Zilavka – 2007 – 8.9 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

A superbly low alcohol wine; perfect for warm weather and I could see this as a year round white wine.  I could picture this wine with a bowl of clam chowder.  This wine is 85% Zilavka and 15% Krkosija.
This wine gives notes of green melon, lime, nutmeg and white pepper; a brilliant gold color. These varietals are heritage grapes in a region producing wine for a long time.  This wine is not just a curiosity but a serious wine to enjoy.
