59% Syrah, 23% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre & 5% Cinsault; the Syrah lead the varietals in giving definition and boldness.  Drink this wine with a wonderful piece of steak or lamb.  The wine contains structure. Firmness and beautiful tannins; the wine presents with dark red fruit, flint, underbrush and Italian truffle.

Kilikanoon South Australia Shiraz Grenache - 2005 - 8.4 - James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

March 17, 2008

A fruit bomb wine.  I was disappointed.  Shiraz and Grenache can temper the fruit and bring a fuller wine–this wine starts promising and ends with a fruit that keep going and ends on raisin.  Disappointing.

Buil & Gine Joan Gine Gine Priorato – 8.9 – 2001 - James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

February 3, 2008

This Priorato is a blend of Granache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan; this wine exhibits plenty of herbaceous notes; most pronounced are Eucalyptus and mint.  This Priorato seems to be at it’s prime; I would enjoy now.

Castillo de Almansa Alamansa Garnacha – 2005 – 7.6 - James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

December 10, 2007

I picked this bottle at The Wine Club in San Francisco.  The handwritten sign said “Smokin” as I have expressed previously I am skeptical when I see these signs is to often believe the opposite.  Now I have good luck with previous call outs.  But this wine, which had a synth cork, and I reflect that in my rating, was not “Smokin.”  The wine did not have as pronounced fruit, acid, or spice that I expected and hoped; the wine overall was weak.  Given the reasonable price point I realize I wouldn’t or couldn’t expect a 9.0 but I was hoping for a bit more.
