Viu Manent Colchagua Valley Malbec - 2005 - 7.9 - James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

January 28, 2008

Very disappointed with the synth cork which imparts an especially noticeable taste.  It took a while for the wine to recover from this shock; the wine with either a natural cork or screw cap would have shown through much more naturally and would have been a superb experience.   I am fascinated with Chilean Malbecs which often impart Eucalyptus; this wine not only had Eucalyptus it also exhibited Blackberry Coulis, Allspice, fresh sanded wood and forest floor.

Viu Manent Colchagua Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon - 2005 - 9.0 - James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

December 2, 2007

Viu Manent Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon from the Valle de Colchagua is an amazing find.  I bought this bottle at The Wine Club in San Francisco.  The sign read “a steal…$7.99″  I always read these hand-written signs with skepticism.  But I also it was worth the try.  $8.00 won’t kill me.  This wine was much better than I expected.  It was gorgeous, silky tannins, blackberry, Chanterelle, earth, chocolate, thunder storm, forest, anise, and cardamom.  This wine was so well structured and even through my taste.  The only sad thing is that I went back to the Wine Club a week later and they were sold out.  But I will keep a look out for this wine and so should you.

Montes Alpha Apalta Vineyard Colchagua Valley Syrah - 2005 - 8.8 - James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

September 3, 2007

A very nice value Syrah from Chile. Montes is the Chilean version of Penfolds…. well not exactly but they have a nice suite of wine offerings from any easy on the pocket book wines to higher stratum wine price points. Their Syrah’s are outstanding and differ from their Australian brothers. I sometimes get too much sweetness (and I don’t mean residual sugar) from Australian Shiraz but I do find that in U.S. or Chilean Syrahs. This Syrah is packed with dense and completely linear blackberry, acai, pasilla pepper, cardamom and hint of nutmeg.

Montes Classic Series Colchagua Valley Malbec - 8.4 - James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

September 1, 2007

Montes Classic Series, a value-oriented, line has respectable wines; the Malbec which is much better known worldwide from Argentina. This Malbec is weaker than I would have hoped –each phase of tasting was not consistent. I had hoped for a powerful burst of Malbec’s famous deep rich red berry and fresh ground aromatic pepper. This Malbec had pronounced vanilla, bay leaf, field mushroom, and pomegranite.
