Trenza Blanco Edna Valley Albariño Granache Blanc – 2008 – 8.8 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

An very interesting blend of Albariño Granache Blanc (Trenza is Spanish for braid) on these two popular white Iberian varietals and it is the first blend that I have tasted—this wine is 14.2% alcohol.  This wine braids together a generous acid structure and imparts a pronounced minerality; this wine exhibits notes of gold kiwi, vanilla, white peppers and Adriatic fig.

Bokish Lodi Albariño – 2007 – 8.9 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

Lodi better known for big bold reds also grows some wonderful white wine grapes.  This shows that what one might think of a cooler weather varietal actually does quite well in warm Lodi.   The wine is higher in alcohol content but is not terribly noticeable.  This wine gives subtle hints of exotic fruit, green melon, sweet citrus zest and Piñon.

Laxas Rias Baixas Albariño – 2006 – 9.0 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

Unpretentious, where acid and fruit are in a harmonious play with each other and give a wine that is distinct.  This wine presents with notes of citron, dried banana, mid-summer mission fig and slight hint of cardamom.

Aires de Arosa Rias Baixas Albariño – 2005 – 8.8 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

Rich and racy acid; low alcohol make for a perfect wine for food, in particular, shell fish; complex wine with bold spice – nutmeg, allspice but do not overpower the white Heirloom tomato and white nectarine.

¡Salud!

Solar de Serrade Alvarinho Vinho Verde Portugal – 2006 – 8.9 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

Subtle hint of Brioche (something I never get from an Alvarhino – Albariño), cardamom and baked Apricot. Alvarhino are so food friendly and this wine could be served with food or not; the acids are approachable on all levels.

¡Salud!

Nora Rias Baixas Albariño – 2004 – 8.7 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez

Nora Albariño a wondrous wine to enjoy as a stand-alone wine or with food; an excellent seafood wine or with Spanish almonds. This wine gives abundance of fresh cut grass, Meyer lemon zest, Granny Smith apple, kiwi, and Adriatic fig. Any time I drink an Albarino I think of a kiwi farm where many vineyards once held kiwi plantings. Albarino’s are more expensive than some American whites but have a rightful place in the culinary and wine worlds.

Kanonkop Kadette Cape Blend South Africa – 2004 – 6.5 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patrico Meléndez

This wine is half Pinotage, with remaining components of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Only a mother or a fan of this curious grape can truly appreciate a Pinotage. Pinotage a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault grapes is so distinctively different from all other grapes. No need for South African Winemakers to worry that this grape might be overtaken in another land. This is the only wine grape that I have tried to appreciate but cannot find a way to enjoy. It is gamey and has an unpleasant spice (a spice that I am not sure exists) and always presents with a very medicinal finish. The Pinotage in this blend overtakes the other varietals as if they were not present. I remember the first Pinotage, I purchased (Fairview) and I was hoping it would be a blissful Pinot Noir like experience — I was, no doubt, terribly disappointed.
