Epicuro Beneventano Aglianico – 2007 – 8.6 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez
Here is an Italian wine of Greek heritage that you hardly see at any wine retailer.
This wine presents with notes baked blackberry, ground clove, fennel and field mushroom… a very pleasant finish.. Light tannins a perfect Saturday afternoon sipper.
A fine price from …. You guessed it – Trader Joes… $4.99 a bottle.

Tommolo Montepulciano d’Abruzzo – 2007 – 8.7 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez
The Montepulciano grape is lighter in style, slightly vitreous, higher in it’s acid profile. This particular wine is subdued in it’s initial taste. This wine gives notes of black cherry and finishes prominently with cedar, pepper and sweet spices. Overall this is a drier wine than might command food—Marinara-based food.
This wine another fine selection at Trader Joes and I continue to be pleasantly surprised with a $4.99 retail. And there’s more…..it’s organic! I don’t just review wines found @ Trader Joes—however—I am just finding outstanding values that are easy on the pocket book and make their offering makes it possible to enjoy wine without emptying your wallet.

Epicuro Nero d’Avola – 2007 – 8.8 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez
The Nero d’Avola grape is nearly synonymous with Sicily and indigenous to Italy. Nero means black and the southeast Sicillian village of it’s origin is Avola hence Nero d’Avola. It’s a long name but a formidable wine low alcohol 13% it’s bursting with notes of roasted blueberry, baking spices and wooded underbrush, drier than you might expect with silky tannins basking this dark inky wine. This is a fantastic Nero d’Avola and for the price I couldn’t believe I just paid $4.99 a bottle at Trader Joe’s. It is in fact one of the best Nero d’Avolas I have had in some time. The glass I drank this from cost more than the bottle price.
