Llama Mendoza Old Vine Malbec – 2005 – 8.4 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez
A delightful rich and bold Malbec–plenty of herbaceous notes – fennel, anise and black pepper, cedar, field mushroom, chocolate, and blueberry. This wine holds promise but unfortunately the synth cork was noticeable. I would love to try this wine without it’s synth closure for it’s baseline characheristics.

Qupé Santa Ynez Marsanne – 2006 – 8.8 -James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez
A wine that is served well with food or even as a stand alone wine. The wine has bright and vivid acid complementing the subtle tropical fruit notes of star fruit and passion fruit with a hint of nutmeg and almond on finish.

5 Mile Bridge Margarita Vineyard Paso Robles Syrah – 2005 – 9.0 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez
Deep ruby in color; a bold and sophisticated Syrah with dark chocolate notes layered with soft black pepper, Oaxacan spice and ending in baked blackberry and açaí.

Sutcliffe Vineyards Colorado Signature Merlot – 2006 – 8.7 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez
I never had a Colorado Merlot or any wines from Colorado before–this wine can be judged on it’s high altitude for a unique wine–this wine is bold and rich like it’s California brethren but lighter in body but still packed black pepper, eucalyptus, fennel, ground pecans and clove.

Tierra Brisa Mendoza Chardonnay – 2006 – 8.1 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez
This is an un-oaked Chardonnay; pale straw color and a refreshingly crisp Chardonnay with very generous acid. Bounteous Comice pear, vanilla, almond, and Lychee fruit.
This bottle was sealed with a synth cork.

Viu Manent Colchagua Valley Malbec – 2007 – 8.1 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez
I do think this wine would be markedly better if there was either a screwcap or real cork. I think this wine and they have utilized real cork previously. I include in this rating a subtraction for the synth cork.
This wine is a very good value (even in spite of it’s synth cork); this is a different style Malbec–this is not the Mendozan style Malbec and it doesn’t need to be. This wine is lighter (though inky in color) giving both rose petal and pepper, red pear and cardamom notes.
Purchased at Canyon Market, San Francisco – $6.99
