d’Arenberg Footbolt Australia Shiraz – 2004 – 8.4 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This Shiraz is popular but I have never really found it to be my wine. This wine is too tart, red delicious apple, raspberry, baked plum, and citrus and citrus peel.

Schild Estate Barrosa Valley Shiraz – 2004 – 8.8 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patrico Meléndez

A well priced strong Barossa Shiraz; seems like a no brainer but to get a Shiraz with spice and fruit can be difficult.  I like Shiraz with pepper and especially enjoy eucalyptus coupled with coffee and chocolate.  This Shiraz presents with the essential features of what I think makes a wondrous Shiraz.   A good priced good quality Shiraz is a tall order there are not many of them but this is one.

Thom Clark William Randell Kabininge Vineyard Barossa Shiraz – 2004 – 9.1 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patrico Meléndez

Dark fire engine red and oak pronounced wine with long living deep red berries – boysenberry, blackberry, black pepper, and an unexpected mineral finish.

Yalumba Hand-picked Barossa Valley Shiraz-Viognier – 2004 – 8.9 – James Meléndez / Jaime Patrico Meléndez

Deep ink in coloration. This wine presents with lush mid-red fruit to Mexican chili peppers, slight basil and simmering spices. A lovely wine for rich beef, game or wild salmon dinner.

d’Arenberg Peppermint Paddock McLaren Vale Sparkling Chambourcin – 8.9 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Don’t let the name fool you. Peppermint Paddock, as far as I understand, is the presence of Peppermint where these Chambourcin grow. Australians produce an abundance of red sparkling wines everything from Merlot to Cabernet Sauvignon to Chambourcin. This sparkling wine is deep jewel toned and presents unexpected components like chocolate powder to just crushed blackberry. This red sparkling is ideal not just for turkey but for a hot mid-summer dinner.

Capcanes Mas Donis Barrica Montsant – 2004 – 8.0 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Mas Donis a Grenache and Syrah blend. This blend is aromatic and fragrant. But the bottle had a synth cork which disappointed me greatly. This bottle has the makings of a good bottle of wine but I knew the flavour profile would be hurt. The nose was wonderful but the taste would be over-powered by the synth cork. The synth cork took over the natural flavours that were present and masked them beyond the synthetic notes. Despite this masking there were boysenberry, leather, cedar and chocolate dust.

Kanonkop Kadette Cape Blend South Africa – 2004 – 6.5 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

This wine is half Pinotage, with remaining components of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Only a mother or a fan of this curious grape can truly appreciate a Pinotage. Pinotage a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault grapes is so distinctively different from all other grapes. No need for South African Winemakers to worry that this grape might be overtaken in another land. This is the only wine grape that I have tried to appreciate but cannot find a way to enjoy. It is gamey and has an unpleasant spice (a spice that I am not sure exists) and always presents with a very medicinal finish. The Pinotage in this blend overtakes the other varietals as if they were not present. I remember the first Pinotage, I purchased (Fairview) and I was hoping it would be a blissful Pinot Noir like experience — I was, no doubt, terribly disappointed.

Seven Terraces Marlborough Pinot Noir – 2006 – 8.8 – James Meléndez /James the Wine Guy

I love Pinot’s from New Zealand but that does not always like the vintage or producer. I expect a lot from Pinot’s regardless of where they are born. I always a knock my socks off Pinot. But this was not the love affair that I so dearly longed for–this wine had head from dusting of red peppers, some plum and a bit deprived on the medium red fruits, some leather and some underbrush.

Ferngrove Vineyards Estate Frankland River, Western Australia Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon – 8.4 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Ferngrove Vineyards Estate Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon is a wine that has the best of both worlds and good for those who don’t like too much of one of this varietals profiles.
Approximately 70% Sauvignon Blanc /30% Semillon exhibits streamed minerals, white pepper, and sweet lime and orange peel.

Dog Point Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc – 8.9 – James Meléndez / James the Wine Guy

Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc exhibited fresh cut greens, allspice, apple pie and white nectarine. Good as a stand alone Sauvignon Blanc. Sauvignon Blancs are not always wines that need be served only with food; occasionally there are gorgeous wines like this that would make an excellent mid-summer wine as well as a wine to be served with just cooked crab.

K & L Wine Merchants – $17.99
